All forage wagons are manufactured as either ‘centre feed’, where the delivery of material is under the centre section of the machine, or as ‘side feed’, where the teased forage material is transported via a conveyer to the side of the machine.

There are advantages and disadvantages with both.

Centre feeds are more flexible in the handling of hay and stubble residues and side feeds afford delivery under fence lines (hot wires) or into feed troughs. The side feed machine has a removable side conveyer, so that it can function as a centre feed with materials not suited to belt transportation. The machines come in an array of sizes and in two basic categories.

The machines only have one control mechanism and once set will function automatically without continuous operator input. Feeding is initiated by supplying hydraulic oil and stopped by closing that valve.

Traditionally in New Zealand forage wagons were used to feed grass silage only. More recently in areas capable of growing maize silage that product is almost completely replaced grass silage. In areas where maize cannot be grown due climate, in particular frosting, grass silage is often supplemented with a wide range of other feeds.

Baled hay and straw are used strategically along with a range of vegetables which may be seasonally and locally available. As an example pumpkins, squash, onions, potatoes and carrots. Grain is often added and experience has shown that a stripe placed along the top of the load is mixed effectively in the output.

While traditional grass and maize silage are fed using belt cross conveyers the other products do not track effectively on belts leading to major jam-ups (especially with straw/hay). Our Multi Feed units are designed to solve these problems and offer trouble free handling of multiple feed types.

We have resolved design issues such as extra floor strength so that large dense bales can be dropped over the sides. We have strengthened floor, teaser bars, teeth and drive systems. We have replaced the belt cross conveyer with roller chain driven cross bars, over a core-ten steel conveyer deck to provide superior traction and resilience.

We have opened the exit points and strengthened the front and side panels to facilitate the maneuvering and extraction of large bales from silage forks.

The Multi Feed specification is an option on all side feed machines.

The 10.7m³ Wagon is the same length as the 8.5 & 9.6m³ models. The side dimensions provide for an extra 200 mm of bin and elevator width. Heavier 13 mm HT floor chain and sprockets are used and a 4 mm thick pressing forms the base of the wider tub sides. The axles are of higher specification to accommodate extra load and the bin has more lateral support by way of heavy channels.

The side feed models have a 900 mm wide belt driven from a third hydraulic motor unloading to the right hand side at a standard clearance height of 650mm. This unit is ideal for fence line and trough feeding of precision chop silage. A hydraulically operated side shift extension option is also available.

The side feed assembly is removable to allow the wagon to be used for centre feeding of hay and straw. An additional option is a roller chain and bar conveyer at widths out to 1200mm. These are exceptionally effective in handling hay and crop residues which tend to slip on convention belts.
