Apply under mature producing trees through the growth period every 4 to 6 weeks, application rates dependant on crop size and age of the tree.

Nutrient Comments
Avocado trees have a moderate nutrient demand and can tolerate a wide range of nutrients in the soil, provided there is good drainage, roots are extremely sensitive to low oxygen concentrations in the root zone.

Nutrient identified as being of concern are nitrogen, zinc and Boron


Nitrogen
Normal nutrient levels for nitrogen apply to the Hass variety. Other varieties (Fuerte) have a lower leaf nitrogen level of 1.6 – 2.0%.

Avocado require high levels of nitrogen for adequate flowering and fruit set.


Zinc
Zinc deficiencies affects young leaves which tend to be small, narrow, chlorotic and often resettled.


Boron
Boron deficiencies may inhibit the elongation of growing shoots. Pollination and fruit set can be poor and developing fruit may become distorted. Leaves become thick and corky with necrotic patches, lower veins may also crack.

Kiwifruit are a boron sensitive crop, excessive boron can lead to a reduction of fruit yield and premature ripening in cool storage.


Other
Calcium in the soil is also important as a means to manage the root fungus Phytophthora. A pH over 6.2 is preferred. Soils with a pH over 7 may induce iron deficiencies.
