About Dunlea Products
Dunlea Products - Mudgway Trailers is a family business based in Kaikoura.
The business was established in 1985 with Ross Dunlea repairing chainsaws and lawn mowers and doing other light engineering work.
The company now employs13 staff, in addition to managing directors Ross and Jill Dunlea and son Shane, whom now looks after the day to day running.
The business is split into three main divisions – Mudgway trailers, engineering and retail.
The engineering division services the community with general engineering work.
“We manufacture Dunlea farm gates, which are sold throughout the South island and are fully galvanised and made from high-tensile steel. We have two people full-time on that,” Jill says.
Recently Dunlea Products purchased a robotic welder, the biggest of its type in New Zealand, which has further increased production.
Jill says the investment in that technology is paying off with the robotic welder doing in 20 minutes, jobs that take an hour to do manually. The welder operates up to 10 hours a day.
A fully equipped engineering workshop services farming, fishing and tourist industries and there is a steadily growing market for farm gates, trailers,feeders and utility decks.
Ross says he has a policy of ensuring equipment is modern and has a well-equipped machine shop to enable a wide range of big and small engineering jobs to be undertaken efficiently.
